Description
Whittingham Hall is a house dated 1653, as indicated by a brick tablet in the gable of a late 19th-century porch, though it may be older. The building is constructed of red brick in English bond and has a roof made of mid-20th century plain tiles. It stands two storeys high with attics and features a long central range flanked by projecting cross-wings, with an additional wing extending to the rear. The windows are mainly casements with square-leaded panes, primarily from the 18th century. In the left wing, there are two 17th-century two-light windows with moulded frames, along with two similar early windows at the rear.
The central gabled porch has a six-panel door, with the upper two panels glazed, and the upper part of the architrave is carved and has been reused from another source. The wings have shaped gables with circular attic windows, although the left gable and the entire right gable end were rebuilt in the mid-20th century. The house features one flat-roofed dormer and two internal stacks, the earlier one located above the porch. Originally, this structure served as a principal outbuilding of the former manor house of Whittingham Hall, which was situated within a large moated enclosure to the north. The left wing and part of the central range still exist as a barn, now used as ancillary accommodation for the house. Inside, there is a notable ground floor wooden fireplace with bolection moulding and a carved frieze.
