Description
This barn, located 50 meters east of Castle Farmhouse, dates back to the early 16th century with later alterations from the late 16th century and around 1800. It features five bays and is constructed from timber framing with weatherboarding. The roof is sheathed in asbestos, although it was likely thatched originally. Around 1800, a gabled midstrey was added to the center bay on the east side.
The barn showcases heavy 16th-century studwork with long arched windbraces that have a convex curve. Originally, the walls were filled with wattle and daub. The complete 16th-century crownpost system includes rectangular posts that are two-way braced. The roof was initially hipped, and the alterations at both ends include clasped-purlins. Most tie-beams were arch-braced, except for the southernmost bay, which features a small original side door. There is also evidence of a loft and/or a partition, indicating it may have functioned as a stable or cowhouse. A further bay was added to the north end around 1600, with repairs made at both ends around 1800. The barn is situated 30 meters north of the moated site of Offton Castle, which is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
