Description

The barn located 70 meters south of Framsden Hall dates back to around 1500 and features 12 bays. The lower walls are made of red brick with burnt headers, displaying a limited amount of diaper patterning, and include a plinth at the base and a course of splayed on-edge bricks at the top. The upper walls are timber-framed and brick-nogged, with broad arched primary wind-braces supporting the close-studwork in each bay. The roof is covered with plain tiles and is both hipped and gabletted.

Prominent gabled porches, constructed similarly to the main building, are found at bays 4 and 9. The barn has 19th and 20th-century boarded doors, and some doorways have been reduced in size since the 19th century or earlier. One porch features two-centred arched doorways made of massive oak timber, which may have been present in the other porches as well. Each bay contains two narrow splayed cross-windows of brick at a low level, and there are additional high-level windows in the brick nogging that may also be original.

A triangular ridge piece, a rare feature in Suffolk from the 16th century, is present, along with canted queen-struts rising from arch-braced tie-beams. Attached to the west side are lower pantiled outbuildings from the 19th century, which are not of special interest. This barn is a large and significant example of an early 16th-century structure, well-preserved and demonstrating unique roof carpentry that indicates it was built by the same carpenter as Framsden Hall.
