Description
High Hall Cottage is a cottage dating from the early 15th century. It is timber framed and plastered, topped with a thatched roof, and has one and a half storeys. The cottage features old casement windows and a gabled dormer at the front, along with a boarded entrance door. There is a 19th-century external stack on the left gable end. The building originally comprised an open hall and an adjacent service end, with much of the original structure still visible inside. The paired doorways leading to the service end are intact and have simple two-centred arches; part of the original entrance doorway can also be seen in the front wall. The roof features queen posts in the open truss, which are of cruciform section with broach stops. The service end has been altered, and the floor has been replaced at a later date. At the upper end of the hall, there is an inserted stack with a large open fireplace on the ground floor, while the solar end beyond has been rebuilt and now forms a separate property known as Melrose.
