Description
Old Cyder House is a former barn that was converted for use as a cyder house in the early 18th century and is now a shop and storage area. The building dates back to the 17th century and features a timber frame that is cement-rendered, with a colourwashed brick gable end on the west side. It has a plaintiled roof.
On the south side, there are two 2-light casement windows from the late 19th century, each topped with a projecting bracketed gable that has applied timbering and cusped bargeboards. There is a central late 19th-century doorway with a similar gable, featuring a boarded door with studded battens, divided into two leaves. A wind vane dated 1771 is mounted over the roof.
The structure has a three-bay frame with full-height studding and curved bracing on the exterior, along with some secondary studs used as infilling. The upper floor dates to the 18th century, and the roof includes two rows of stepped butt purlins and straight wind bracing. Cyder production began here around 1730. Inside, there is a simple horse-powered crusher with a granite trough and a single edge-runner stone dated 'CC 1728', as well as a screw press dated 1729, which was altered in 1922.
