Description

Tawny’s is a former 16th-century farmhouse, built in two phases with the parlour end being slightly later. Around 1800, a stable was added to the right and is now incorporated into the living space. The house is timber-framed and plastered with a thatched roof and is approximately one-and-a-half storeys high, originally comprising three rooms. Small-paned casement windows have been added in the mid-20th century; one original diamond-mullioned window is visible on the upper floor, and another is inside the house. A 20th-century battened plank door is located in the cross-entryway with a shallow open-fronted porch. The roof has three eyebrow dormers. An internal stack with a rendered shaft is visible, along with a gable stack to the left. A 19th-century addition is constructed in red brick with chevron tiles. Much of the timber frame is exposed internally. Arched bracing is visible in the service and hall cells, but is concealed at the parlour end, where it sits against the outside of the studs. The hall and parlour have ceilings with chamfered joists, with the parlour ceiling being more elaborately finished. The parlour wall posts feature shaped heads. The house retains back-to-back open fireplaces and an altered newel stair. The roof is a clasped purlin structure, wind-braced only over the older part of the house.
