Description

Rookery Farmhouse is a timber-framed farmhouse dating to the 16th and 17th centuries, built in at least two phases. The exterior features mid-20th century panelled plasterwork with a decorative band of pargetting at the first-floor level, and a roof tiled with plain tiles to the front and pantiles to the rear. The house has two storeys and three windows, with 19th and 20th century mullion and transom casements. A central doorway has a six-panel door within a 19th-century doorcase featuring reeded pilasters, a frieze, and a cornice. External stacks are located against each gable. The interior has been largely modernized in the 19th and 20th centuries. A former 16th-century service wing on the right side of the house contains, on the ground floor, a close-studded partition wall that appears to have once been an external wall, along with heavy, plain joists. There is also some exposed first-floor framing and one original window with cavetto mullions. The remainder of the front range is likely late 16th century, featuring a moulded bridging beam on the ground floor, although the structure is mostly concealed. A 19th-century staircase is present. A small 17th-century dairy wing is located at the rear, and a large, unremarkable mid-20th century wing projects forward to the right of the main house.
