Description
The water tower, located about 40 meters west of the stables in Thornham Magna, dates from the late 19th century. It features a double skin of red brick with white brick facing on the upper stages and has a fishscale patterned slate roof. The tower is square in plan and consists of four tall stages plus an attic.
At the base, there is a recessed boarded door surrounded by outer English bond brickwork. Above this, two oculi are framed with chamfered gauged brick surrounds. The left side of the tower has a recessed sash window with a gauged brick flat arched head, and a small louvred opening above it. On the right side, there is a clock set in a chamfered gauged brick surround.
The upper water tank stage is adorned with a cornice and features two vertical openings on each side, along with recessed patterned boarding and outer chamfers. The pyramidal roof has cogged eaves that slightly splay at the base and is topped with timber French Renaissance style dormers on each face. An open traceried octagonal belfry and a leaded ogee cupola with a weathervane complete the structure.
