Description
This pair of cottages, located 490 meters west of The Old Rectory, was originally built as one house in the early 17th century and later subdivided in the early 19th century. The cottages are one storey high with attics and feature a three-cell cross-entry plan. They are constructed from timber framing and plaster, with some 18th-century herringbone pargetting visible on the rear elevation. The thatched roof has two dormers, which have collapsed into the building. An early 17th-century chimney made of pink and buff brick is present, along with early 19th-century casement windows that are in fragmentary condition. There are two boarded entrance doors from the 19th century, with the right door positioned at the cross-entry. The framing is quite substantial for its period, featuring unchamfered floor joists and leaf-stop chamfered main beams. The roof is a clasped-purlin design. Inside, there are back-to-back lintelled open fireplaces with 19th-century ranges inserted. Notable interior features include an early 17th-century moulded plank door and an early 18th-century door with two bolection-moulded panels. At the time of the survey, the cottages were in very poor condition, with the roof over the service cell collapsed, missing thatch in other areas, and the front wall of the parlour cell on the verge of collapse. Despite their condition, they are included for their complete early 17th-century framing.
