Description
The Elms is a house dating from the 16th century, comprising two stages. It has one storey and attics, with a three-cell lobby-entrance plan. The structure is timber-framed and plastered, topped with a thatched half-hipped roof featuring two eyebrow casement dormers. There is an axial chimney, with the shaft rebuilt in 20th-century red brick. The windows are three-light small-pane casements, and there is an oak plank battened door from 1987 at the lobby-entrance position.
Originally an open hall house, likely from the early 16th century, it underwent significant alterations around 1550 to 1580. The interior features an open truss with a plain archbraced tie beam and evidence of widely-spaced studding, along with a coupled rafter roof. The major remodelling in the mid-16th century included close-studding with arch windbracing. The first floor joists in all cells are well chamfered. The parlour cell to the right was entirely rebuilt, with the first floor level lower than that inserted into the open hall. There is a lintelled open fireplace in the lower bay of the hall, although most of this bay was truncated during the addition of the parlour block. The house is included in the listing despite late 20th-century remodelling due to its high-quality 16th-century work.
