Description
Landguard Fort is an artillery fort built in 1711 and remodelled around 1871, located on the site of a fort constructed between 1540 and 1545, which was rebuilt in 1624. The fort features 18th-century work in red brick and 19th-century construction in yellow brick, which is faced externally with granite. It has an irregular pentagon shape with angle bastions. The southwest side was altered in 1871 to create a casement battery for six guns, with a semicircular gorge that projected into the earlier parade. The northeast entrance includes a slightly projecting brick gateway with embattled turrets, a blocked doorway, and two upper stage loops. Inside, there is a granite archway with a keystone dated 1875. The fort was originally built to guard Harwich Harbour.
