Description

Kelsale Manor is a farmhouse with an early 16th century core, possibly even older, and early 18th century facades. The building features a single central range flanked by two long wings that are set forward. It is constructed with timber framing and plaster, has a plaster cove eaves cornice, and a roof covered with plain tiles, while the rear of the central range has pantiles. The structure is two storeys high and has a symmetrical five-bay central range with cross windows that contain square leaded panes. The central window on the first floor is semi-circular headed. The doorway has a Gibbs surround topped with a triangular pediment and features 20th century paired three-panel doors, where the upper panel of each door is glazed, and the lower panels are raised and fielded. There is a central internal stack and a three-light ovolo-moulded mullion window at the rear.

On the inside face of the right-hand wing, there is a similar doorway without the pediment. The gable end of this wing showcases a fine 18th century three-light ground floor splayed bay with sash windows, engaged columns at the corners, a frieze, and a modillion cornice with a pediment above the central window. The outer (south) facade of this wing features a series of sash windows in flush frames with heavy glazing bars. Originally, this wing was jettied, and when it was cased in during the 18th century, a hollow ground floor cavity was left, allowing a carved corner post to be visible through a panel in a window reveal. Inside, there is a notable early to mid-18th century staircase with two designs of twisted balusters per tread, a moulded handrail with scrolled ends, and fluted newel posts. Some small remnants of carved woodwork can be found in the right-hand wing.
