Description

The Old Guildhall is a former guildhall located on Low Road in Kelsale, likely dating from the late 15th century, with a 16th-century wing at the rear. The building has undergone significant alterations, particularly in the late 19th century. The date 1725 on the right side refers to the brick casing at that end of the structure. It features a timber frame with plastering and a red brick casing on the right gable, topped by a plaintiled roof and pantiles on the rear wing.

The building is two storeys high, with a jettied first floor supported by a bracketed corner post on the facade and left gable. The first floor has a nearly continuous range of six 20th-century casement windows with square leaded panes. There are two 20th-century boarded doors, one of which has a rectangular fanlight. The building has three stacks with late 19th-century shafts made of fluted brickwork, complete with moulded bases and oversailing caps; one stack is flush with the facade, and the lower parts of two former stacks are visible on either side.

A notable feature of the interior is the impressive five-bay crown post roof, which includes cambered and arch-braced tie beams and four crown posts with square sections and moulded bases and heads. The rest of the interior has been significantly altered.
