Description

The Congregational Chapel in Rendham is a former chapel that has been disused since 1979. The stone on the facade indicates it was erected in 1750 and enlarged in 1834, with a Sunday School and vestry added at the rear in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of red brick with a plain tiled roof and has two storeys. The symmetrical facade, dating from 1834, features three window ranges with sash windows that have glazing bars in flush frames. The ground floor has flat brick arches, while the first floor has cambered arches. There are matching doorways on either side, each with a six-panel raised and fielded door and a rectangular fanlight with semi-circular and radiating glazing bars. The return fronts have three bays, with the original two rear bays displaying a brick band at the first floor level and two semi-circular headed "preaching" windows on the rear wall. The double span hipped roof extends forward over the 1834 extension.

Inside, the chapel remains intact, featuring a gallery with a full entablature and cornice on three sides, supported by Roman Doric wooden columns painted to resemble marble. There are plain rectangular piers at the angles with circular fluted columns in between. The interior also includes a good set of box pews, some of which have raised and fielded panels, and a pulpit that is likely from the mid 18th century.
