Description
Westwood Lodge is a former manor house with a history dating back to the mid-16th century for the west wing, while the east wing was added between 1652 and 1656, and the central section was constructed in the mid-17th century. The building has undergone significant alterations, particularly in the mid-19th century when the original crow-stepped gables were removed, the eaves were raised (except on the east side of the west wing), a new roof was built over the old one, and a white brick facade was added. The lodge has an H-shaped plan and is primarily built of red brick, with the east wing showing traces of original dark header diaper work. The south facade features a white brick finish, a slated roof with hipped gables to the south, and some glazed pantiles on the west wing. The building stands two storeys high with an attic.
The south front has a five-window range in a 1:3:1 pattern, mostly consisting of sash windows with some casements, and flat brick arches. There is a small asymmetrical entrance porch with a stone cornice and a brick balustrade above, leading to a four-panel door with a rectangular fanlight. The west wing retains some original window openings with hood moulds and one original doorway, along with a crow-stepped gable to the north, where only the east slope, featuring the base of a pinnacle at eaves level, remains original. The west wing has two large external stacks, with one on the east wing, both of which have upper sections rebuilt in the 19th century. Inside the west wing, there is a fine heavily beamed ceiling on the ground floor.
