Description
The White Hart Inn is a former coaching inn that now operates as a public house. It dates from the early to mid-16th century and has undergone various alterations and additions over the years. The building features a timber frame with plasterwork on the rear and the north gable end, while the south side showcases a mid to late 17th-century red brick Dutch gable end. The front facade is made of painted brick from the mid-19th century. The roof is covered with modern plain tiles on the front slope and pantiles on the rear.
The inn is two storeys tall with an attic and has a six-window range, featuring inset sashes with glazing bars and flat arches with raised keys. The doorway is asymmetrical and includes a six-panel door, with a second doorway that has since been removed. The Dutch gable has a brick band at the first-floor level and brick coping on the parapet. There is one internal stack and another stack located at the Dutch gable end. A 17th-century gabled staircase extension is present at the rear, along with various 20th-century extensions.
Inside, the inn boasts fine, heavily roll-moulded beams and joists in two bays of the ground floor ceiling. There is a 17th-century dog-leg staircase with turned balusters, newels featuring ornamental finials, and a moulded handrail. Additionally, a first-floor room contains some 16th-century panelling, which may have been reused from another part of the building.
