Description

Former farmhouse, dating to around 1600. It originally had a 3-cell plan with a cross-entry and a later lobby entrance, both of which remain in use. The house is timber-framed and rendered, with a thatched roof. A prominent feature is the internal chimney stack with four attached hexagonal shafts. There are various old 3-light and 2-light casement windows, one with a transome; a small original 3-light window with diamond mullions is above the lobby. On the rear wall, three 4-light and one 5-light original windows illuminate the first floor, these having ovolo-moulded mullions. A plank door, featuring applied pilaster strips, leads to the cross-entry, and a 20th-century open porch serves the lobby entrance.

The interior retains exceptionally good timbering and a remarkable number of original features. This includes wide studding with a middle rail, main posts with jowls and arched braces, and a main beam in the hall with ovolo-moulding and curved stops with jewel, all on a large scale. The parlour features an ovolo-moulded main beam and plain, unchamfered joists set flat. A plain timber lintel, keyed for later plaster, is found in the hall, while the parlour has a 4-centred brick arch to the fireplace. The service area was originally divided into two parts, with a 3-light diamond-mullioned window and an adjoining 4-light window (possibly a replacement) in the gable wall. The upper floor has two fireplaces, and the original ceilings have joists set on edge. The roof structure consists of 6 bays with clasped purlins, diminished principals, and windbraces. An original 6-light diamond-mullioned window in the attic is partly blocked. The building is recognised for its group value.
