Description
Haylock's Cottage is an 18th-century cottage located in South Elmham All Saints. It is a single-storey building with attics and features a basic two-cell lobby-entrance plan. The cottage is timber-framed and rendered, topped with a thatched roof that has a decorated ridge. Inside, there is a plain red brick chimney stack. The ground floor has two three-light casement windows, each with a single horizontal bar; one window has pintle hinges. There are also two gabled dormers, each with two-light casement windows. The original doorway has been blocked and replaced with a sloping buttress, while the current entrance is a small porch at the south-west end. A single-storey extension made of matching materials is located at the north-east end, along with later lean-to structures at the rear. The internal framing is quite delicate, with primary braces bisecting the studs and no middle rail. Small main beams and narrow joists are set on edge, supported by clamps attached to the outer walls. A newel stair is positioned beside the stack. The cottage is noted for its group value and is recognized as a rare late example of a lobby-entrance plan.
