Description
The National Westminster Bank, located at Nos 1 & 3 Market Place, is an 18th-century building with a late 19th-century red brick front. It has two storeys and attics, featuring gauged flat arches over sash windows adorned with ornamental keystones. The roof is covered with machine tiles and is hipped, with two hipped dormer casements. The bank, which has records dating back to 1871, has its entrance on the ground floor to the right, and there is a splay bay on the left that extends through both the ground and first floors. The residence entrance includes a six-panel door set within a stucco case with consoles. A foliate cornice runs below the parapet, which is topped with a stone cope. The west return to Bridge Street is also from the 18th century and is painted stucco, featuring two flush frame sash windows on both the ground and first floors with glazing bars, as well as a casement window in the gable. Nos 1 to 11 (odd), Nos 11A, 13, and 17 to 21 (odd) form a group with the butter cross.
