Description
This barn, located immediately to the east of Shadowbarn Farmhouse, dates from the late 17th century. It is timber-framed and covered with weatherboarding, topped by a clay pantiled roof. The barn has a frame consisting of five bays, with an entrance located in the middle bay on the south side only. The full height studs are bisected by steeply-angled primary braces, which take the form of St. Andrew's crosses in the west end wall. The post-heads are moulded with an ogee form. The roof structure features ten bays, with deep narrow principals and two rows of stepped butt purlins; the ends of the purlins are pared-off rather than tenoned. In the end bays, straight braces are positioned behind the purlins, and the rafters are bisected similarly to the studs. At the east end, the barn overlaps an earlier timber-framed section, which was likely originally aisled and storied, with posts and braces supporting the wall-plates on each side.
