Description
High House is a house, possibly originally a summer-house, dating from the mid-17th century. It was built for Thomas Rede (1613-1681) of Weston Hall, whose initials are displayed in wrought iron on one gable end. The house features red brick construction with rusticated quoins and a pantiled roof. It has two storeys and an attic, with a layout of two bays by one bay. The window openings are adorned with semi-circular drip moulds made of brick and tile, and small brick dentils below; on the east gable end, the drip moulds are segmental. There is a central doorway on the north side, which has been bricked up, featuring a rusticated surround and a similar drip mould that encloses a central raised and moulded brick feature. The north side also has mid-20th century windows in the original openings. A heavy, tapering external stack is located against the south wall, with the upper portion rebuilt in the mid-20th century.
Inside, the house consists of a single chamber on both the ground and first floors. The ground floor ceiling is divided into six panels, with moulded plaster casing around the beams. The ceiling of the upper chamber also has moulded panels and notable ornamental plasterwork, including a running design of four-petalled flowers and foliage on the underside of the beams, and a frieze of small masks, swags, and four-petalled flowers around the room. At the time of the survey in April 1985, both ceilings were reported to be damaged and blackened due to a recent fire. According to Suckling's 'The History and Antiquities of the County of Suffolk' (1846), the house was originally much loftier, but there are no visible signs of alteration. Mid-20th century single-storey additions have been made to the structure.
