Description
Saltgate 1 is a building that dates back to the 17th century, with a probable 16th century base structure incorporated into it. The main front and one side were refaced in the 18th century, and there are 19th century additions at the rear. Historical records indicate that the house was once known as "The Greyhound and Dog Inn." The exterior is relatively plain, featuring three storeys with a parapet. The brickwork is distempered and includes two brick bands. There are five windows, some of which have been filled in, and modern casements with a mullion transom in flush frames, topped with segmental arches. The entrance features a six-panel door in a wooden case with three-quarter Doric columns and a bracket pediment, along with an arched radial bar fanlight.
Inside, the building has interesting features such as panelled rooms, enriched window architraves and mantels, and decorative cornices. There are two ducksnest grates, one contemporary and one imported, and an oak staircase with turned newels. One of the panelled rooms has a door marked with the date 1790. It is said that the famous writer Chateaubriand once stayed in the house.
