Description
The remains of Grey Friars Monastery are located in Dunwich and date back to after 1289, with the surviving structures likely from the late 14th century. The ruins encompass an area of just over 7 acres and include walling, two gateways to the west, and a small fragment of one of the monastic buildings. The construction features random flint and stone with stone dressings, along with some later repairs using pebble and brick. Both gateways have moulded four-centre arches, and the smaller northern gateway includes flushwork panelling above. The remaining fragment of the monastic buildings is situated along the south side of the cloister, with the north wall displaying buttresses and two tiers of window openings featuring four-centre arches, some of which have been restored, including one arch with cusping. The boundary wall is fragmentary in places. The site is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
