Description
Ship House and Red House are two houses located on St. James's Street in Dunwich. The eastern house, known as Ship House, is the western half of a four-bay 18th-century house, with the western half now part of the adjoining Ship Inn. This section has undergone significant alterations in the mid-20th century. The western house, called Red House, dates back to the early 19th century.
The buildings are constructed of red brick and feature a pantile roof, except for the rear slope of the eastern part, which has a plain tiled roof. The western part has two storeys and a two-window range, with sashes that have glazing bars in flush frames and a segmental arch on the ground floor. The doorway features an inset six-panel door with a rectangular fanlight above, a cornice, and panelled reveals. The eastern part also has two storeys and an attic, with a two-window range that includes two-light casements and one sash window on the ground floor. A lean-to porch with a half-glazed door was added in 1983, and the attic was enlarged in the mid-20th century by raising the roof and adding two large dormer windows.
