Description
The Church of St Michael and All Angels is a medieval parish church featuring a nave, chancel, west tower, and south porch. It is constructed of flint rubble, with some remnants of plaster on the nave, and has stone dressings. The roof is thatched. The circular tower, which dates from the 12th century or earlier, has a 19th-century lancet west window and evidence of blocked lancet windows higher up. The bell-chamber openings are Y-traceried and there is a red brick parapet with gargoyles at the base. The nave, also from the 12th century, was likely raised in the early 14th century, with the north and south walls each featuring one Y-traceried window and one two-light Perpendicular window. The south nave doorway, dating from the early 14th century, has a moulded arch, while the north doorway is simpler. An early 18th-century red brick porch leads to the early 14th-century chancel, which has three Y-traceried windows and a Priest's doorway on the south side, and two similar windows on the north side, along with a three-light east window featuring intersecting tracery. Most of the windows are largely original.
Inside, both the nave and chancel have coupled rafter roofs with boarded ceilings. In the southwest nave, there is a niche for a banner stave locker. The chancel contains piscinas in the north and south, with the southern piscina featuring a cusped ogee arch and a small tracery above, set in the east jamb of a window, where the sill is lowered to create a sedilia. The church also has a 15th-century octagonal font, with the bowl panels carved with angels holding shields, alternating with floral motifs, and four lions on the stem. An early 17th-century pulpit with a backboard is situated on a later base.
