Description

The Rookery is a farmhouse with a core dating from the late 16th century, featuring significant later alterations, including an early 18th-century facade and a mid-19th-century range at the rear. The building has a timber-framed core and a red brick exterior topped with a roof of glazed black pantiles. It stands two storeys high with an attic and was likely originally designed in a three-cell layout. It appears that the left end of the house was removed in the 17th century, at which time the current brick gable ends were added.

The facade includes four windows with mid-20th-century sashes made of white aluminium, set beneath modern soldier-course arches and flanked by pilaster strips. The entrance features a six-panel door, with the upper two panels being glazed, and is topped by a pedimented hood. A flat parapet, rebuilt in the mid-20th century, is present, along with gable end stacks. The right gable end displays pairs of original segmental-headed windows at three levels. Inside, the ground floor reveals exposed joists that are chamfered, and the floorbeam in the left room is marked with four carved dates: 1590, 1667, 1692, and 1841; part of this room now serves as the entrance hall. Some framing is visible in the rear wall, indicating the presence of diamond-mullioned windows at the first-floor level. There are also two fireplaces featuring depressed brick arches. The roof structure includes clasped and butt purlins along with arched wind-bracing. Additionally, a pump located in the rear range is dated 1846.
