Description
Kier's Cottage is a house, which was later divided into two cottages, dating from around 1600 and significantly restored between 1980 and 1984. The building features part timber framing with exposed studding, which has been somewhat altered, and mid-20th century brick nogging, as well as sections of red brick. The original crow-stepped brick gable end on the left has terracotta pot finials, and there is some apparently original brickwork at the right-hand (service) end. The roof is pantiled, and the structure has two storeys and an attic, arranged in a three-cell form with an original lobby entrance.
The windows are mid-20th century casements, and there is a mid-20th century door. Inside, there is an internal stack with four flues arranged in a sawtooth pattern, which has been reduced in height; one of the flues has a protruding brick shaped like a horse's head, similar to that at Thorpe View in Walberswick. All four main rooms feature ovolo-moulded main beams and cornices, with the parlour also displaying similar moulding on the wall posts and fireplace lintel. The building has exposed joisting throughout and retains its original newel stairs with two flights. It is likely that Kier's Cottage was built in connection with Mutford Hall, located approximately 400 meters to the south.
