Description
The Mutford War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, with later additions for the Second World War. It is made of granite and limestone and is prominently located at the center of the burial ground next to the Church of St Andrew, which is a Grade I listed building.
The memorial features a plain wheel-head cross that rests on a tapering rough-hewn plinth, which is supported by a three-stepped square base. The cross, plinth, and the upper step of the base are carved from dark grey granite, while the lower steps are made of limestone. The memorial stands approximately 4.6 meters high.
On the north face of the plinth, the main inscription reads: "IN MEMORIAM/ MEN OF MUTFORD WHO FELL IN THE/ GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918/ (11 NAMES)/ AND THESE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR NATIVE LAND/ SHALL LIVE IN MEMORY FOR EVERMORE." Additionally, there is another inscription on the north face of the upper step of the base that states: "TO THE MEN WHO FELL IN THE/ WORLD WAR, 1939 – 1945/ (3 NAMES)."
