Description
The Martlesham War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1919, with later additions for the Second World War. It is made of granite and is located in the churchyard to the north-west of the Church of St Mary the Virgin, which is a Grade II* listed building.
The memorial features a Celtic cross that stands approximately 2.1 meters high on a tapering plinth with a single-stepped base. The cross is carved from polished granite and includes a raised circular boss at its center, with relief-carved interlace on its arms.
The main inscription, made with leaded lettering on the plinth, reads: "TO THE HONOURED MEMORY/ OF THE MEN OF MARTLESHAM/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914–1918," followed by the names of 12 servicemen. On the back face of the plinth, there is an inscription that states: "ALSO OF THOSE WHO FELL IN THE/ WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945," along with the names of 13 servicemen who died in the Second World War.
