Description
Ivy House is a former farmhouse dating from the mid 17th century, with some fragments from the 16th century. The building has two storeys and attics, and features a modernised exterior in a three-cell form. It is constructed of timber framing with a rendered finish and topped with clay pantiles. Inside, there is an internal chimney stack with a plain red brick shaft. The house has plain two-light casement windows, an enclosed gabled porch, and a two-storey wing at the rear, all of which were added in the mid 20th century.
At the north end of the house, there are two bays of 16th-century framing, characterized by heavy arched braces at the angles. The rest of the frame exhibits a combination of features that are difficult to classify but appear to be from the same period, including primary braces, bisected studs, deep narrow main beams, and joists set on edge, along with moulded post-heads on the ground floor. There are also some reconstructed diamond-mullioned windows in what seem to be their original positions. The roof is well-constructed, featuring clasped purlins, diminished principals, and windbraces. A similar unusual combination of features can be found at The Mutton in Offton, near Ipswich.
