Description
Framlingham Hall Cottages is a house that dates back to the 16th century. It was extended and converted into two cottages in the early 19th century. The building has two storeys and features a timber-framed structure that is rendered, with a roof covered in black glazed pantiles and plain barge-boards.
Inside, there is an internal chimney-stack with a rebuilt red brick shaft, along with two square chimneys positioned diagonally, featuring corbelled bases and caps. The exterior includes three-light casement windows, which have a single horizontal bar on the upper storeys and two horizontal bars on the ground storey. There are also two enclosed gabled porches.
Originally, the house consisted of four bays, including a narrow bay for the chimney and entry. Inside, the framing is plain and well-preserved, with unchamfered joists set flat and reversed braces at the angles. There are blocked diamond-mullioned windows with the mullions still in place, although the roof is inaccessible. In the early 19th century, a fifth bay was added, and the house was divided into two cottages along the line of the chimney-stack, with a studded partition wall added to separate the former two-bay room to the east of the stack into a living room and kitchen.
