Description
Nos 5 and 6 Thoroughfare are 16th century buildings that stand two stories tall with an attic. They feature three gabled dormers and are timber-framed, originally with brick nogging, which is now exposed in a section that has been experimentally restored. The roofs are covered with pantiles. No 6 has plain stucco on the exterior, with an overhanging first floor that displays high relief wood carving along the entire front, above a 19th century shop front. This carving includes two lion supporters of a shield, from which the arms have been removed, believed to have belonged to the De Argentein family. No 5 has three windows with sash designs in flush frames, while No 6 has one three-light mullion transom casement window. No 5 features a late 19th century shop front with an ogee bracket cornice. Notably, No 5 is the birthplace of George Lansbury. Together, Nos 1 to 6, Nos 8 to 10, and Nos 12 to 16 form a group.
