Description

Garden store, located 10 metres north of Villa Farmhouse, is a garage and garden store built in the early 16th century as a two-cell open-hall house. It features a timber frame, weather-boarded at the front and plastered at the rear, with red brick underbuilding from the 18th and 19th centuries at both ends. The roof is plaintiled, with pantiles at the rear, and is half-hipped at the left-hand service end. The building has various 19th and 20th-century windows and a pair of boarded garage doors.

Inside, the two-bay hall remains open to the rafters, with a central open truss that includes an arch-braced uncambered tie-beam, a square crown-post with two-way arch-bracing, and moderate smoke encrustation from the open hearth. At the left-hand end, there is a single room with a lodged upper floor. The tie-beam at the external wall is interrupted for a small blocked 4-light diamond-mullioned window under the eaves, which originally lit the attic. There may have been a further two-storey cell to the right of the open hall. Much of the studwork in the external walls was replaced in the 18th century, but otherwise, the structure has seen little alteration since the 16th century. This preservation is likely due to its early replacement by a larger house, after which it became an outbuilding, possibly serving as a bakehouse or brewhouse.
