Description

Frostenden Hall is a former manor house dating from the mid-17th century, with a facade dating to the mid-to-late 18th century. A later pantiled range was added set forward to the left, and the property was altered in the mid-20th century, now forming part of the main house. The building is constructed of red brick, originally colourwashed, with a plaintiled roof. It has a 5-bay facade arranged as 1:3:1, with hipped wings set slightly forward. Sash windows with glazing bars are set in flush frames under flat brick arches. The central bay’s right-hand side features a 20th-century glazed door within a Tuscan doorcase, featuring half-engaged columns and a pedimented entablature. A tall sash window with a matching surround balances the door on the left-hand side. A small internal stack is present. The returns of the wings are divided into three bays by brick pilasters, with windows in the centre bay; the left-hand return has been altered. The rear of the building exhibits flanking Dutch gables, each with blocked circular windows at attic level, and a central straight gable with blocked square openings. The Dutch gables incorporate integral stacks, while the central gable has a later external stack. Original plaster-moulded beamed ceilings remain on the first floor, with one first-floor room also featuring painted panelling from the late 18th or early 19th century. Some timber framing has been exposed in one internal rear wall, possibly representing remnants of an earlier structure.
