Description
Gardener's Cottage, built around 1900, stands approximately 40 yards northwest of Bawdsey Manor. It is a brick building with a timber-framed first floor, rendered infill, and a plain tiled roof. The front of the cottage features an ashlar plinth. A porchway, with both cambered and round arches supported by decorated wooden piers, provides access, leading to a panelled front door and single-light casement windows, all set within a large cambered arch with moulded brick voussoirs bearing square flower bosses. A three-light, cambered-headed window is to the left.
The jettied first floor has close studding, a middle rail aligned with the central window sills, and a brattished tie-beam. Decorative bargeboards adorn the gable. A substantial chimney stack supports three Tudor flues with octagonal caps. A projecting bay to the right has a four-light, cambered-headed ground floor window and a jettied first floor with an oriel window of four lights, featuring a round-arched transom above the central two lights and a keystone with a lionshead mask. A jettied gable is above, with a cambered tie beam and close-studding. To the left of this is a two-light window with decorative leaded glazing, and a three-light window above. Further to the right is another massive chimney stack with flues and octagonal caps. A range of service buildings, with brick base and close-studded upper walls, extends to the right, connecting to the walls of the walled garden and gymnasium nearby.
