Description

This farm buildings complex, located approximately 50 metres north of Little Wenham Castle and adjacent to the south of the churchyard, likely dates to the 17th and 18th centuries, although it may have earlier origins. The complex comprises a barn, cattle sheds, and cartlodges. The barn is timber framed and weatherboarded, with a red brick plinth. It has red plain tiled main and gabled midstrey roofs. A red pantiled lean-to cartlodge is attached to the west, followed by a single-storey red brick cartlodge with a red pantiled roof, featuring 8 open bays facing into the farmyard. Connected to the south-east of the barn is another single-storey red brick structure with a red pantile roof, facing west into the farmyard. This section has 5 open bays and closed end bays, and is weatherboarded, incorporating 3 stable doors. The southern edge of the farmyard is formed by a wall listed separately (reference 3/79), while the western boundary is defined by another listed complex (reference 3/81). The interior of the barn includes large 9-bay spaces with close studding, a midrail, and straight tension braces. It features jowled posts with brackets, replacing braces to the tie beam, and a roof dating to approximately the 18th century, characterized by collars morticed to principals and staggered butt purlins. The cattle sheds and cart lodges have clasped purlin roofs. The farmyard and wall are discussed and depicted in a plan by E Sandon in "Suffolk Houses" (1977), pages 39 and 4.
