Description
Brooks Farmhouse is a 16th to 17th century timber-framed and plastered house located on the northeast side of The Green in Newton. It has been restored and renovated in the 20th century, featuring modern doors and windows that are in keeping with its style. A narrow, three-storey gabled wing, likely added in the 17th century as a staircase wing, projects from the front. The upper storey of this wing jetties at the northwest end, supported by exposed joists. The timber framing is visible on most of the southwest and northwest fronts, and the house is primarily two storeys high. The windows are casements with leaded lights. There are two gabled porches that project from the front, both adorned with carved bargeboards designed in the 20th century to reflect an older style. At the southeast end, there is a slightly lower wing that likely served as a granary or outbuilding originally but has now been converted into part of the dwelling. The rear wing on the northwest end features a large external chimney stack with tabled offsets. The roofs are tiled, with hipped ends at the northwest and southeast.
