Description
This is a mid-19th century terrace of cottages built around a 16th century timber-framed building. The cottages are constructed of painted brick with slate roofs. The terrace has two storeys and a six-window front, featuring sash windows in plain reveals. Anglia Cottage has a 20th-century bow window on the ground floor. The cottages have varied 19th and 20th-century doors. Saffron Cottage was formerly jettied, and a blocked diamond mullion window is visible on the right-hand return. A first-floor window at the rear has been altered with replaced diamond mullions.
The interior features horizontal laid beams and joists, and probably contains an original plank staircase. The probable remains of a brick cellar also exist. On the first floor of the right-hand return, there is an early 17th-century wall painting. This painting depicts an arcade of five pilasters with angular capitals; beneath each arch is a pedentive drop and circle, all in green paint outlined and picked out in black. This decoration is comparable to that found at Pepys’ House in Huntingdon. The interiors of Anglia Cottage and Nos 2-3 Anglia Cottages have not been inspected.
