Description
The garden wall and gateway, dating from the 16th century, are located to the north of Stutton Hall. The structure is made of red brick and features a crenellated and pinnacled design, with three pinnacles on the east and west faces and four on the north face. The pinnacles are adorned with Tudor mouldings, including moulded capitals, bases, and domes with crockets, all supported by pilasters. A plinth runs along the base of the wall.
In the west wall, there is a heavy nailed vertically boarded gate with two rails and five muntins on the west face, along with a smaller nailed five-board gate at the southeast corner. The north wall includes a brick gateway that faces both north and south, with return walls and a red plain tiled roof. The north face features a crow-stepped gable, pinnacled angled buttresses, plinths, and a band that extends over a moulded four-centred archway, which has a sunk panel in the gable and moulded imposts.
The south face presents a semi-circular pediment with a moulded finial, and the angled buttresses are detailed with moulded plinths and capitals, each featuring double fluted pilasters. A moulded band below the pediment continues to the buttress returns, leading to a semi-circular archway with moulded imposts. A square stone sundial with a gnomon is set into the pediment.
Inside, there is a brick floor, plastered walls and ceiling, and side seat alcoves with mouldings above the seats. The interior also includes four-centre arched double gates, where the lower half is vertically boarded and the upper half is slatted with a top rail. Additionally, three stone garden urns are situated within the garden.
