Description
The Swan Hotel, formerly known as The Old Wool Hall, is a fine 15th-century hall house located on Lady Street in Lavenham. It features cross wings at both the north and south ends and has a tiled roof. The building has been significantly restored and is now part of the Swan Hotel. Originally, it served as the hall of Our Lady's Guild before being converted into a Wool Hall in the late 17th century. In 1911, the entire structure was dismantled and later re-erected by the Duchess of Argyll.
The building stands two storeys tall, with exposed timber-framing throughout, except for some areas on the north and west extensions. The upper storeys of the cross wings are jettied, supported by exposed joists, curved brackets with carved capitals and shafts, and a carved bressumer. The south cross wing also jetties out on the south front, featuring a fine carved corner post at the south corner. The central hall is open to the roof and boasts tall six-light oak mullioned windows. All windows are leaded casements of various sizes, with some having oak mullions. A 17th-century chimney stack with sawtooth shafting (restored) is present on the north extension. The first part of the west extension originally had a jettied upper story, which was underbuilt in brick in 1793, as indicated by a date panel. The interior has been well restored, retaining a number of original features.
