Description

The Guildhall, located at 1161 Church Walk, is a Grade I listed building dating from the latter part of the 15th century, with later additions on the east and west sides. It features a three-storey wing on the southwest and a long wing extending south, with a total frontage of approximately 80 feet. The entire structure is timber-framed and plastered, with tiled roofs. The most visually striking aspect is the exposed timber-framing on the north side of the main building. Here, each upper storey projects on curved brackets with moulded capitals and shafts, while the shafts on the ground floor front are panelled and have traceried heads. Although some timberwork and most window mullions have been replaced, the westerly window on the first floor retains remnants of traceried heads.

Inside, the building includes an open kingpost roof and moulded beams. The eastern wing originally projected on both sides at the upper storey but has since been underbuilt in brick, with a semi-octagonal east end. The western wing exhibits mainly 18th-century characteristics and is likely part of the old Grammar School. The three-storey wing on the southwest has a projecting upper storey and the long southern wing, which served as a dormitory for the workhouse in the 18th century, features a ground floor with brick facing on the east side, displaying a small panel with the date 1780. The listed buildings in Church Walk are recognized as a group.
