Description
This lychgate, built around 1897, is designed in the Arts & Crafts style by E S Prior. It features dwarf, curved side walls made of flint with stone dressings, which support the timber-framed upper walls and a hipped, bowed roof covered in shingle tiles, sloping to the north and south. The structure has two bays, with heavy storey posts that support a central cambered tie beam and a pegged, carved king post above. The roof is constructed with a double side purlin ridge board. The cill and wall plates are plain, and there are three-light side openings with S-shaped mullions. All main timbers, except for the centre truss and wall plates, are adorned with carved trailing foliage, while the ridge board features carved flowers and foliage. There are timber side seats in the south bay, and the north bay is faced with flint. The lychgate has a pair of gates made with pegged, diagonal battens, along with wrought iron strap hinges and a catch. It was given by Colonel M C Browning of Brantham Court to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria, with historical notes provided by J W Gooch, the Peoples Warden.
