Description
Trinity Hospital is a Grade I listed quadrangular almshouse located on Church Walk in Long Melford. Originally built in 1573 by Sir William Cordell, who also constructed Melford Hall, the building underwent significant restoration in 1847. It was established to accommodate 12 poor men, 2 women, and a warden.
The south range of the quadrangle, which faces south, is two storeys high and features an embattled parapet along with gabled cross wings at both the east and west ends that extend southward. The structure is constructed of red brick with stone quoins and capping. The windows include one, two, and three-light stone-dressed mullioned windows with segmental heads and lattice leaded lights. Notably, there is a central oriel window with four lights on the first storey and additional four-light bays on the ground storey of the cross wings. The roof is tiled and includes a central ogee domed bell turret with a weathervane on the south side, as well as external chimney stacks on the east, north, and west sides, featuring square shafts set diagonally.
