Description

The barn at Redgate Farm is likely late 16th century, with alterations and additions made later. It is a timber-framed building set on a brick plinth and clad with weatherboards. The roof is thatched, with plain tiles to the south and pantiles to the later additions. The barn’s original structure is a 5-bay frame which includes a midstrey, a small enclosed space, on the south side and a wagon entrance to the north. The wall posts are partially jowled, and the tie beams have mortices that once held arch braces, now replaced with knees. The structure also features a groundsill, middle rail, studded walls, and arch braces and tension braces on some posts. The end walls were rebuilt in the 18th century. The principal rafter trusses have collars, while the two levels of butt purlins have wind braces to the upper level.
