Description
Monkey Lodge is a lodge dating from 1861, built for John Berners. It has undergone alterations to the rear in the 20th century. The lodge is constructed of white brick with ashlar dressings and slate roofs. It comprises three intersecting rectangular sections, with a 20th-century porch added at an angle to the rear. The lodge is one and a half storeys high and features a moulded plinth. The front range has rusticated angle pilasters with paired ashlar capitals and a frieze with swag ornament to the returns. There is a dentilled cornice and a pedimented gable. Sashes with glazing bars are set within ashlar architraves, which have cyma recta cornices and brick aprons. A plaque is set between the ground floor and attic windows, bearing a coat of arms and the motto "DEL FUEGO EL AROLA”. A segmental arch frames the attic sash. The subsidiary ranges also have rusticated angles and square recesses with sunk panels above the sash windows, all within ashlar architraves. Moulded cornices are present throughout. A rear stack has a curvilinear gable with a plaque inscribed "18 1B 61". A further stack to the rear left is panelled and corniced, with flanking scrolled brackets. Attached to the front left is a short wall with a rusticated, corniced pier topped with a ball finial. Monkey Lodge originally served as a lodge to Woolverstone Hall. The lodge's name and motto are said to be linked to an incident where a pet monkey saved a child of the Berners family from a fire.
