Description

The Gables is a house that dates back to the 16th century, with possible earlier origins, and was extensively remodeled in the early to mid-19th century. It features a timber-framed structure that is rendered, with some extensions made of painted brick at the rear. The roof is covered in plain tiles, and there are red brick stacks. The building has two storeys and an attic in part, with a hall that includes cross wings; the right wing projects to the rear and has a later extension. There is also a rear stair tower. The 19th-century detailing is in the Tudor Gothic style, featuring a gabled porch with bargeboards, a chamfered Tudor arch, and half-glazed double doors. The windows are chamfered mullion and transom types, and the gables of the cross wings also have bargeboards. The tall 19th-century stacks and the gabled stair tower at the rear include an unequal sash window with glazing bars in a flush architrave.

Inside, some of the framing is exposed in the right cross wing at the rear and on the first floor of the hall range. The cross wing has a four-bay frame with chamfered jowled posts, a chamfered beam with a step stop, and exposed joists. The wall plate features an edge-halved scarf joint. A notable feature is the good 18th-century cut-string dogleg staircase, which has carved tread ends and three balusters per tread that are either column or barleysugar-on-vase type. The handrail is moulded and ramped, with a panelled square newel that forms a plinth for a composite column supporting the first-floor landing. There are several doors from the 17th and 18th centuries, including a 17th-century panelled bedroom door with HL hinges.
