Description

The Clock House is a house, likely dating from the early 17th century, with alterations made in the early 20th century. It is timber-framed and now rendered with a pebbledash finish, featuring red brick stacks and additions. The roof is covered with plain tiles. The house is arranged in an L-shape, with a front range of two storeys and an attic, and a rear cross range to the right. Later additions to the rear are not of particular interest.

The front of the house has French windows flanked by horned sash windows with glazing bars. Above these are two casement windows. A stack is located at the left end, and a ridge stack is positioned off-centre to the right, incorporating four octagonal shafts, both stacks having been rebuilt. Timber coved eaves are present. The right-hand gable features an early 19th-century bow window with sash windows, also incorporating glazing bars, with casements on the first floor and in the attic. A short cross wing completes the structure.

The interior has been remodelled in the early 20th century. A large, chamfered longitudinal beam runs through the space. An inserted dogleg staircase, likely from the early 18th century, is notable for its turned balusters (two per tread), square newels and ramped handrail. A panelled dado follows the line of the staircase. Sections of the timber frame are exposed, showing chamfered jowled posts and a chamfered arch brace. The roof is a clasped purlin roof with wind braces, and a chamfered longitudinal beam with run-out stops is also visible.
