Description
Hill House is a house that dates back to the 16th century for its cross wing, with a hall range from the 17th century, featuring later alterations and additions. The building is timber-framed and rendered, with some sections in red brick. It has a plain tile roof and a rebuilt red brick stack. The house is two storeys high and consists of a two-cell lobby-entry hall range with a two-bay cross wing to the right, which has been extended to the rear at a later date. There is a 20th-century conservatory at the rear and a lower porch that connects to a later building, which is not of special interest. A 19th-century gabled porch features a half-glazed door. The hall range has 16-pane sash windows, while the cross wing has a 12-pane sash window. There are also 20th-century casements with glazing bars above. The cross wing is at a slightly lower level, and the right return features trench windows with a casement above. The roof has a swept ridge stack.
Inside the cross wing, there are beams with run-out and step stops, jowled posts, and a studded wall on the first floor. The hall range includes a chamfered beam and exposed joists. The kitchen features a chamfered basket-arched fireplace made of orange brick, and there is reused timber with fine leaf scroll carving and shields, one bearing the initial "I," serving as the bressummer of the hall fireplace. The roofs are clasped purlin types.
