Description
17 Friars Street is an interesting building from the late 16th century, although it is said to be even older. It features good architectural detail but has undergone significant exterior and interior alterations. The roof may have been raised in the 18th century or later. The building is two storeys tall, timber-framed with plastered panels, and has tiled roofs. The upper storey projects at the front and is supported by unusual brackets that have caved ornamentation, which is under-cut and hangs clear of the back part of the bracket. At the south end of the house, there is a very large rectangular chimney stack. The ground floor room, which is now a shop, contains a large open fireplace with a heavy beam above it. Inside, there is a fine old staircase, and it is said that there is a wood ribbed ceiling and original bay windows in the back wing of the house. Nos 7 to 17 (odd) form a group.
