Description

The Lambe School, now a village hall, was founded in 1594 by Edward Lambe. The building consists of two phases of construction, with the earlier section, probably the original building, located to the right, and a later addition from the early 19th century to the left. The school was restored in the 1970s.

The earlier section is timber-framed, with the front and right gable encased in red brick laid in a Flemish bond pattern. The rear is weatherboarded. The front has a slate roof, while the rear has plain tiles. It is one storey high and has two bays. It features sash windows with glazing bars in reveals. The later range is constructed of white brick with a slate roof. A 20th-century weatherboarded extension is located at the rear. This range is also one storey high, with four 16-pane sash windows in reveals, each with a sill under a shallow, pedimented lintel and angle pilasters. The original entrance is to the left gable end, but the current access is through the rear extension, connected by a later linking wall to the earlier range.

Inside the earlier section, the exposed framing includes a ground rail on a plinth, studded walls, jowled posts with mortices for arch braces, and replaced tie beams. There's a rebuilt inglenook with a chamfered timber bressummer. A blocked, restored three-light diamond mullion window is set within a studded wall above. The school’s origins lie in an endowment by Mistress Lettice Dykes in 1589, with Edward Lambe's formal foundation recorded in a deed dated September 25th, 1594.
